Actor Shabana Azmi was injured in an accident on Saturday afternoon on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, an official said. Her Safari car crashed into a truck from the rear as both the vehicles were moving towards Mumbai.
The incident took place around 3:30 pm near Khalapur, over 60 km from Mumbai, when the car in which she was traveling rammed into a truck.
Azmi’s spokesperson said the actor was undergoing a check-up. “She is fine, nothing to worry about,” the spokesperson added. Javed Akhtar celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday. The two were spotted in various parties hosted in honour of Javed’s special day. Many pictures of eventful Thursday and Friday nights are doing the rounds on social media. Many Bollywood dignitaries including Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, Farah Khan, Urmila Matondkar and many others made their presence on the occasion to mark the auteur’s special day.

Shabana’s husband and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who was travelling behind her in a separate car, an Audi, was safe and his car was not involved in the crash, said police.
The Safari was being driven by Azmi’s driver followed by the Audi. The driver tried to overtake and ended up crashing into the moving truck from the rear.
Within fifteen minutes of the accident, the police team reached the spot. However, by the time, the first responders had already rushed Shabana to the hospital. She is currently admitted at MGM Hospital in Kamothe.
Several Bollywood celebrities tweeted about the accident and wished for Shabana’s speedy recovery. Filmmaker Hansal Mehtra wrote, “The Mumbai-Pune expressway has always been dangerous and there is little or no monitoring to prevent rash driving. Have seen so many terrible accidents there. Hope #ShabanaAzmi is fine. Dear @OfficeofUT please improve safety on this route urgently. It is quite a death trap.”
